In order to fulfill the tremendous promise of the Internet and the digital age, it is essential that the online environment be a safe one for families. An increasing number of Americans are concerned about the dangers of so-called peer-to-peer networks, which allow users to connect directly with other computers and their content. The dangers of these networks are many. They can:
  • Subject users to pornography,
  • Open personal files on your home computer to strangers online,
  • Increase the risk of a computer virus,
  • Lure kids into illegally downloading movies and music, which can lead to jail time and fines.

The MPAA has created a free, user-friendly search function for parents to help them identify peer-to-peer software that may be on their computers, and locate music and movie files that have been downloaded.

It does not communicate with any computers or networks outside the home, nor does it transmit any results to anyone other than the person running the program. Parent File Scan cannot differentiate between music or movie files that are lawfully on the computer and pirated ones which may have been illegally downloaded.

What Parent File Scan does do is provide parents with information about what is on their computer so they can take action if necessary.
